How to Choose Your First Road Bike in Cairns
What actually changes how a first road bike feels, from frame size and gearing to the tyre width that suits our rough chip-seal roads.
Happy Deals Time grew out of a small Smithfield workshop where we fixed bikes and built home gyms for people tired of driving south for decent advice. Eighteen years later we still run the same way, with the person who answers your call being the person who does the work.
The shop started because our founder, Elias Happy Deals Time, kept getting asked the same thing at weekend rides: where do you go to get a bike set up properly without a two-week wait. He had a shed, a stand and a decent set of tools, so he started doing fits on a Saturday morning.
Word moved faster than we expected. Within a year we had a leased unit, a second mechanic and the beginnings of what is now a full workshop. The gym side came later, from customers asking whether the same care applied to a squat rack as it did to a headset bearing.
It does, as it turns out. Both jobs are about measuring carefully, torquing to spec and checking your work before the customer rides or lifts on it.
Drop in for a lookWe did not plan any of this in a spreadsheet. It grew out of what local riders and lifters kept asking us for.
Elias starts doing bike fits out of a shed on Iluka Street. Ten customers in the first month, mostly mountain bikers who wanted their knees to stop complaining.
We move into a proper unit, hire a second mechanic and start stocking components instead of ordering everything in. First workshop bench goes in.
The home gym side starts after a customer asks us to build and anchor a power rack. Turns out nobody else local wanted the job. We took it and never stopped.
We add video position capture for fits and rebuild the workshop around it. Fitting sessions go from ninety minutes to two hours and get noticeably better.
Delivery coverage expands to Port Douglas and the Tablelands. We buy a second van and stop turning away jobs that were an hour up the road.
We hit sixty brands on the shelf and pass three thousand fits. Same shed address, much bigger shed.
These come up in every training session we run for new staff, and they apply whether you are buying a chain or a two-thousand-dollar rack.
If we have not checked your reach, your floor or your ceiling, we do not know what you need yet. Guessing wastes your money and our time, so we ask first and quote after.
Every bike gets a torque check and a test loop. Every rack gets a shake test with weight on it. We would rather find the loose bolt in our workshop than have you find it on the road.
Sometimes the answer is that your current bike is fine and you need a twenty-dollar part. We will tell you that, because a customer who trusts us comes back for the next ten years.
Nine of us work here, and most of us have been here long enough to know your name and what you ride.

Bikes
Built a front-loading cargo bike for a Smithfield bakery doing daily drops. Reinforced the rack mounts and swapped the gearing so it climbs the local hills loaded.
Home gym
Turned half a double garage in Trinity Beach into a lifting space. Lifted the ceiling clearance issue with a shorter rack and laid 20mm flooring throughout.
Fleet
Eight commuter bikes for a Cairns hotel, set up with puncture-resistant tyres and a simple single-ring drivetrain so guests cannot easily break them.
Everything else in the shop exists to support these two things, done properly.
We capture your position on video, work through saddle height, reach and cleat angle, then send you out for a real ride before calling it done. Assembly includes torque checks, gear indexing and a test loop.
See how fitting works
We survey the space, flag any ceiling or slab problem before you buy, deliver the gear and anchor the heavy pieces. You get a layout with room to move and a bench that stays put.
See how gym setup worksFour of our staff hold current bike fitting certifications, and we pay for retraining every two years whether they ask or not.
Our install crew carries current working-at-heights and manual-handling tickets, which matters when a rack has to come down a tight stairwell.
Shortlisted in the regional small business awards for service in 2023. We did not win, but the feedback after the interview was genuinely useful.
We strip and sort every replaced component. Usable parts go to a community bike program, and the metal goes to scrap rather than the bin.
Brands and partners we work with
I have bought three bikes here over nine years and every one was set up right before I left the shop. The last fit sorted a shoulder problem two physios could not work out.
They came out, measured the room, and told me the setup I had planned would not fit the way I wanted. Saved me about two grand. The one they built has been solid for three years.

Heat, humidity and low ceilings change what works up here. A practical layout for a garage gym that stays usable through the wet season.
The showroom and workshop share a roof on Iluka Street. Walk in during opening hours, watch a build, and ask whatever you want. No appointment needed for a chat.
